Welcome to Terra Celestia! When global warming and several powerful earthquakes began doing some serious damage to planet Earth, only the animals were given the choice to escape through mysterious portals. When they came through to the other side, they found a wonderful world untouched by humans that was theirs for the taking. Settling in quickly, the horses and wolves have found peace as the ruling species of this new world. The paper is unmarked, the pen ready; It's time to write yourself a new destiny.

Race Me and Win... If You Can.
« Thread Started on Mar 17, 2008, 3:44pm »

Santrest stood there in his majestic composure, tall ears flicking every once in a while as the rushing wind shrieked. He had two basic personalities, and though lately his more composed one was to be found more often than not, now his playful, childlike attitude took over and he found himself panting happily like a puppy again.

This was the perfect place for a race. Just for fun, not for meat or land or anything like that. No... it felt too free for now.

He raised his sensitive maw up to the skies, searching for competition. Anyone, anyone at all...?

His intelligent blue eyes of the sky sparkled quietly as he scebnted out many different scents of horse and wolf. But were any of them coming?

He'd njust have to wait and see, now wouldn't he?

The giant shimmering sheet loomed before me. Could I do it? What was behind it? I was gambling my life with one step and yet the waving doorway called to me like nothing ever had in my life. It practically screamed my name, sending drifts of cool fresh air onto my face as it fluttered, taunting me with my unknown future.

Lifting a dagger, I pawed at it. Instead of my golden flint brushing against the billowing silk, it disappeared, swallowed as if never there, leaving me footless and more than a little freaked out. A silent huff of air escaped my nostrils and I leapt back from it. It fluttered at me and I reared, spinning in circles, why did it taunt me so? Deep prints were left in the dry hot sand as I spun, shaking my moonlit dial about.

Tassels flung into the sky, the wind pulling them with its fingers and then throwing them back against my lean nape. The ribs showed through my heaving cream sides as I made my decision. My ice eyes afright with so many emotions I plunged through the gate the sent me spinning into a world so alike and unlike to the sandy dunes I had just left behind.

My hard hooves hit solid rock and the force of the impact sent me tumbling to the ground in a tangle of long limbed mare. I lay on my side, lifting my head to get a peak of what strange place I had fallen into. Well, This isn't strange at all. I looks alot like home. Theres about two patches of grass in sight and the trees look dead. Red rock earth spun through my vision as I heaved my lithe frame from the ground.

The air was fresher here. I threw my head back, the light glinting off the four pronged scar raking my neck from chin to base. I breathed in the sweet scent of an air that was new and young. I wished so badly to scream through the sky that I was here! I'm here in this young and beautiful world and I want someone to share it with. But no sound escaped me. No sound would ever come from me again.

The wind, more strong and mighty here yet still refreshing, grabbed my tail and played with the strands of white silk and I let out a huff of air that was meant to sound like laughter. Just then, I spotted a wolf. His head raised sky word the wind coursing through his thick fur. He appeared to be waiting for someone. Who? He was all ancy and his tongue was lolling as he panted.

I wanted to run. And from the looks of it so did the wolf. I hate to admit I'm a little leary around wolves. The scar that caused the loss of my voice was ripped into me by one of their very paws...but for some reason my heart longed to be free from the burden of caution. Not only did that blow take my voice, but offered me my freedom in return....I wouldn't be here if a wolf hadn't stolen my voice. My heart fluttered telling me to go. Stupid I no but I listened to it. Flinging my body forward I sped to him. I drummed my feet about 20 yards away, skidding to a stop. Side by side I glanced at him, shaking my head wildly. Hard hooves ripped into the ground and tingles flew across my body as the prospect of a good race unfolded before my eyes.

The cry of a wild wolf reached his dark thorns and a lone grulla stallion turned to look toward the sound. His coat, slightly dusty already, though he had only arrived the night before, let off a dull gleam as he turned to face the sound. He stood alone at the top of the gorge, looking down on the natural runway. His clear, dark eyes scanned the pale, sunbleached stone to find the lupine creature who had howled. Truthfully it would be hard to find the source in a canyon that created multiple echoes but Argentine was sure he could find it with a little searching. Unless he had been mistaken, the sound had originated nearby.
Scanning the long stretch of stone, the stallion looked hard until his optics picked up the lone grey-brown form below. The wolf's pelt blended into the earth and the stallion was surprised he'd been able to spot the canine at all. With a minor sense of pride in his heart, Argentine turned and set off toward an easier slope. He couldn't scale these vertical, water-worn walls; his shod hooves needed a softer slope.

Finding a path down was a little tricky but eventually the grey stallion was making his way into the gorge. He would answer this wolf's call and if they saw eye-to-eye they would race through the gorge. Argentine's thoroughbred blood boiled at the thought of running against an opponent and he tossed his head proudly.

Reaching the bottom, the grulla stallion picked up a light, easy trot, showing off a little as was his custom. He didn't mean to but his owners had driven the lesson into his mind that he must be a graceful and elegant horse. He had been, after all, meant to be a professional showjumper like his sire and grandsire and great-grandsire before him, down the line to the beginning of his pedigree.
His loose gait took him within meters of the wolf when suddenly a golden vision exploded out in front of him, causing the stallion to slide to a quick stop as she stood there, looking around her as the portal closed behind her. She was a beautiful young thing but for the four long scars down her throat. What a wound those must have been....Argentine didn't envy her one bit the tragedy that had left her with those.

She looked around, scented the air, snorted a laugh. Her way of doing things in such a quiet manner was unusual to Argentine but not unlikeable. His friends and family at the barn had been taught to be very quiet so it was no true oddity to him.
She sprang toward the wolf without a word and Argentine knew she, like both males, wanted to race. He smirked, not cruelly, and continued forward, joining them where the wolf sat in the blustery gorge.
Greetings Lady mare and sir Wolf. he said with a smile I assume we gather here for the purpose of competition?
His vocals were a little formal, but then that was to be expected from a young stallion whose entire life had been spent with snobs. The horses were friendly but their way of life had been all pampering and snobbery from their owners; how could they not sound a little snobby themselves after that?

As the two equines came up to me I smiled happily, the memories of hunting not even coming to mind as the tempting scent or possible competition reached my nostrils. I swiftly turned, examining the newcomers.

The first one I saw was the stallion; he seemed confident enough to race against, polite enough to not brag if he won, but not to whine if he lost. I immediately recognized him as adequate competition, even before he spoke his competitive lyrics.

The second I saw was considerably less confident-lloking, and not only that. I subconsciously recognized the aroma of fright wafting from her. But even more noticeable was the wound, the prominent scar. As she skidded to a stop besides me, I nodded, taking it as a visible sign that she wanted a race.

I responded to the stallion, in a confdent, teasingly playful voice. Yes, I believe so... so let the games begin.

To the end of the gorge? I asked the equines eagerly. I smiled, pawing the ground. I was moderately small for my breed, but looks were deceiving; I was the quickest and sturdiest in the neighborhood, back on earth. Then again, that might've been the wolven blood running in my veins.

I scraped a pawprint and long claw marks into the dust-laden ground in anticipation. Want to join us, milord? Homeland manners getting the best of him. And you are racing, milady?

Dust swirled around my fetlocks as the wind ripped the particles from their resting places and hurled them along the gorge. The gusts were at my back, throwing my silken strands forward. My vision followed the direction of the wind. It seemed never ending, the valley. It stretched out beyond the eyes limits, flying to the horizon, and maybe further. So the question was not only are you fast enough.....but also, can you race the horizon?

I've tried many times, and regret to say, I have not succeeded. The sweet pale blue of that so far away always stays out of my reach. Which is perfect logic.

I glanced to the wolf, his head nodded, acknowledging my presence and a sign indicating I was now part of the competition unfolding. I arched my neck and stamped my right flint on the ground. Then a flash of silver caught my eyes. Immediately my focus was on that of a large stallion, prancing to the starting line where the wolf and I stood.

This was a much welcomed sight to me. I haven't seen another equine if over a year. He was well groomed, his hide thick and shiny over his strong muscles. His steel cloak had a blue tint and he stuck out against the dusty land. I could see a flash of metal as he lifted his hooves. I wonder what that is?

His deep lyrics reached my ears, I flicked them forward in anticipation of his words. I smile snuck onto my pale kissers as he addressed me and the wolf. A lungful of air escaped me creating a joyous sound. I doubted they heard me because my small gust of air was lost in the roaring wind that ripped through our course. I wiped the smile of my face and steadied myself. My constantly moving feet ceased there pattering and my dial lay still. The only movement coming from me now was the flick of my harks to hear the wolf speak and the occasional billow of my long threads.

To the end of the gorge? Where is the end? Is there no end? No matter. I gave a bow of my head to that. It would take immense endurance which I knew I possessed a great deal of. He addressed the brute. And then his vocals reached out to me and I met his gaze. His eyes were the same color as mine, maybe a shade paler. Through my stare I told him yes, I would be racing.

What was to be our starting signal? For a strange reason it seemed like the wolf should give us the command to race. Like a strange rule of running educate I waited for any move or sound from the small canine. All my muscles relaxed I stared at my destination, which seems rather strange since I couldn't see the end of the gorge.

A snort of laugher escaped the stallion's pale maw and his creamy-white lips parted to reply to the wolf's query. To the end of the gorge? 'M'afraid I can't see where that is. This gorge is long and winding. It would tire us all out to try to run it's length in a day. However, if you strain your eyes just enough you can see a tree in the distance. I think we should run to that spot. Agreeable? He looked to both of his competitiors with a smile, letting the wind tug and pull at his black tassles. It was as if the dark strands were being pulled to the finish line by some invisible force.

The metal on his hooves made a light clacking noise on the cracked stone of the gorge and Argentine felt a little bad about the slight advantage the grips gave him. They were meant more for jumping on soft terrain, but a race shouldn't be all that different in terms of what grip was needed and such, right?

Tossing his head proudly, the grulla stallion with the white face turned slightly to face the finish line, feeling the predatory wolf on one side and the skittish mare on the other through scent and sound and a little bit of memory. All his sight was trained on that tree and he almost surprised himself when he said, On your mark, sir Wolf. We await your signal. He had picked up that the mare was waiting for the same kind of sign and vocallized what he assumed she couldn't. Since she hadn't spoken thus far he wondered if the scars on her throat had robbed her of her voice. Again he thought that he didn't envy her that tragic moment in her life.

((ok, to make this fair I'm going to assign us all numbers and use a sequence generator to choose our places. After the first random choice I'll take a screenshot and post it here for everyone to see. The numbers will be in the posting order: Santrest is 1, Inconnu is 2 and Argentine is 3. I'll post it as soon as I have it ;)))

-EDIT-
Well....that took less time than I thought it would :P Usually finding a generator takes a while but I found one almost right away! XD
Anyway, here are the results:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a131/Silveron_Apparition/Generatorpic.jpg
I messed with nothing, this I swear on my honor as admin =)
We can now play the race out according to those results. Fun! lolz

OOC: I thought it wouldn't hurt to post the order here, which is 3, 1, 2. It took a long time for the picture to load on my stupid computer, so I thought it'd be helpful. ^_^

I pawed at the ground. I could do short bursts of speed... though my forte was really endurance. Ah well. I pawed at the dust ground, spotting the scraggly tree in the distance: a poor, wilted thing, but still a tree nonetheless.

A low growl started in my throat, then, with a single bark of recognition, all four paws left the terra firma. The jump took me in front shortly, knowing the equines would be right behind me. I had the advantage, but for how long? I concentrated on steady breathing as I heard their quaking hoofsteps behind me.

OOC: Ooooh, what a crappy post! -dies in embarrassment- They're usually sooo long... where'd I go wrong??? XD

I listened to the stag. No not to the tree...I need a long course in order to reach my full speed. I studied his build. His quarters were strong, able to push him from the starting line at immense speeds. Then I thought to mine, they were lean, wiry muscles on them meant for going, and going, and going, and so on and so forth.

I would have to get along with what I had to deal with.

I relaxed my muscles as the grulla male read my mind. I looked at him in surprise and then studied my eyes back on the tree in the distance. It curved to the ground in a sad arch of defeat. It bore no leaves or flowers, it was merely a large branch jutting out of the ground. I estimated it was just about less than a mile. Whoa boy would this be a challenge. Instead of gaining speed gradually I would have to thrust the whole self right from the start.

A low rumble began to resonate from the wolf. It began so quietly I pricked my ears to the sound. It grew in volume, acting as the count down to the loud yap that flew out of the fanged mouth and bounced off the high walls of the canyon. Right as the bark was let loose the wolf bound from his place on the starting line, shooting a few feet in front of us.

And I was in the back. I saw the pluming tail of the wolf, and the rippling back quarters of the equine and I fell behind fast. No need to worry. Slowly but surely, I began gaining back the lost ground. Inches at first then by feet. The bone shattering pounds of my hooves reduced themselves to taps and then I could no longer hear my hard hooves on the rock.

Silence overwhelmed other than my breathing. I gained on the pair, my body floating effortlessly faster and faster. With every stride the speed grew, every second I came closer. It was never ending, could the speed continue to grow? And before I knew It I was side by side with my opponents, but passing them up.

The tree loomed near, I pushed, the air burning in my lungs. My nostrils flared, ripping the oxygen from the sky and gasping it in. I glanced over and found I was ahead of the pair....and this was my mistake. My vision turned to the road again....but it no longer was free for running.

A large rock jet out of the wall, reaching as high as my neck. I knew i couldn't jump it and my body immediately tried to avoid the solid rock that was now in my path. limbs straightened, screeching on the ground and I pushed all my gained momentum in reverse. I threw my body sideways, trying to slow and move around it. It looked clear until a large thud was heard as my shoulder rammed into the end of the rock and I squealed. Well no, air just escaped me and pain shot down my body.

But then it was gone, forgotten in the heat of the race. The rock was cleared now, I had passed my obstacle but now I was behind again. I pushed myself. Breathing fire. Again I began building up my speed. My body screamed in protest, every hammer against the ground jolted my insides and my heart send pulses of venom through my body. I refused to give in. I was so close. The tree was so close. But I was gaining again! Only a few more feet. Now just one! Only an inch! But the tree would not move any further into the distance.

My build, though muscular, screamed in agony as the race continued. The tree was so far away... so far. I watched as the lone mare overtook me, and then fell behind again, but my resolve was in stone. I would not give up.

Hot air, more than my average body temperature, escaped my lungs, already stretched to their extent. Pebbles went by beneath my feet, and they slid from under my flying limbs. My prisms gkleamed as I spotted the tree without trying. Finally... a target.

But as I advanced, I noticed its roots, how they seemed so very, very high. One fell glance riveted my confidence. The tree was up the side of the gorge. I knew I could bound up the slim, crumbling walls... if I had the strength.

The distance was still far, however. I now knew how far just a segment of the gorge was, and it seemed to challenge me like another wolf trying to claim my rightful lands. I growled, a regulation of my breath. The air flowed slowly and steadily, controllably away from my fangs, bared in effort. With the steady energy burst, I darted ahead, once again in the lead.

The next thing that happened was the log. It was hollow, and blended in with the dusty old terrain we now tread upon, though it was a tiny bit darker. It almost looked like a brown serpent, but I didn't notice it (despite my predatorial instincts; perhaps because I was so focused) until my back paws snapped it cleanly into two splintery pieces. With a shard of wooden agony firmly embedded into my paw, I continued, watching the stallion overtake me, and almost the essa, but not quite.

His dark grulla pelt was a dark flash across the pale terrain, his hooves thundering down the course at breakneck speeds. His eyes were set forward, watching only his goal. It was lucky for him that he had chosen the middle 'lane,' he soon realized, for he saw the outcropping of rock and the log on the outskirts of the gorge. They both blended in well and could be dangerous if not seen in time.
Flying along the dusty stone, Argentine felt the warm clay at his feet shattering and crumbling beneath his weight as he flashed past, leaving in his wake a trail of dark craters.

This was what he was meant to do. He was a thoroughbred and therfore competitive, always seeking a challenge in running, jumping, or both, if the need arose. The wind in his mane, the sun on his back, the earth yielding to his hooves....this was the birthright of the professional racehorse, yet it was not where his owners had wish him to go. He had been meant to jump obstacles for them, to rise over all the painted bars like nothing the world had seen. His sire had done it, and his grandsire and his sire before him and so on down the line. However, he had always felt the urge to run with the wind, to follow it wherever that wild and untamed path would take him. His blood boiled at the thought of a race and he never felt better than when the adrenaline of speed pounded through his veins.
Yes, this was his path in life, this was his birthright. Though trained to jump, Argentine was meant for speed and this was his moment of truth.

Flinching slightly at the sound of the pale-coated mare slamming into the jutting rock, Argentine spurred himself on just in time to hear the crunch of old wood as Santrest crushed the log. I chose the best path, apparently, the storm-hued drake thought, a trace of guilt rushing through his mind only to be swept away by adrenaline. It's not really fair but it is life I suppose....Perhaps we will have a rematch one day... In the meantime, I race to win.

His hooves tore up the earth and the sound of his clashing silver shoes was the victory bell as he raced past the dead tree that was their finish line.
He trumpeted a victory call to the skies and, after slowing in small integers, turned and trotted back to the old tree. His breath came hard and his legs ached; he wasn't trained as a runner, however fast he might have been, and the black-maned stallion realized he was favoring his left forefoot a bit. Had he strained a tendon? Pulled a muscle? Whatever it was it wasn't bad enough to take a long time to heal but it would hurt a little in the meantime.
A good race run!he said, smiling with a fiery light in his dark eyes. I feel a little guilty that you both encountered such troubles on the course though...

I brushed past the tree's limbs with a leap, a rusty blur against the pure blue sky. It was a good race, and though I hadn't lost at least I hadn't come in last. I looked behind me, panting just a bit, and finally regulating my deep breaths. The dark, welcoming forest lie beyond me, on the opposite side of the gorge we had started from. My 20-20 vision scanned the other two competitors. The winning one... what was his name...? He looked rather confident, and the other one... the scarred mare... she had not yet crossed the finishing point. I nodded, showing respect... not trust. Trusting anything that beat me was a fatal mistake, I realized, as my usual composure returned at last and the last of the playful grinning left my maw.

Despite my left-back-paw being injured and splintered, I quickly darted for the trees. My bloodline was never used to exposure to sun for long periods of time, though all of my relatives (including me) had remarkable endurance. Anyhow, I was restless and reluctant to be social. Before either could blink, I was within the wood, looking back at them. My low, snarling voice said just a few last words.

"Nice race. Congratulations on the win. My name's Santrest. See you sometime, maybe?"

Then, before either equine could reply, I darted further into the wood. The last thing they would see as I left the premises was my rusty-brownish-gray tail whipping around and snapping a few low-hanging branches. Many green-brown leaves flew off as my tail acted as a two-legger "weed whacker." More logs snapped beneath my paws, this time with me knowing my paws were landing on them. I laughed, natural to me but most likely eerie to my natural prey, and bounded away.
